G Cakes was created when Ginger decided to pursue her interest in cake decorating.  She began baking and decorating sheet cakes in her mom's kitchen over twenty years ago, but in 2006, while making a cake for her grandmother's birthday, her interest in cake decorating peaked.  After friends started asking Ginger to make cakes for their celebrations, she decided to pursue this interest in cake decorating a bit further, and soon G Cakes was formed!  Hoping to one day open a restaurant with her husband, in the meantime Ginger is exploring the opportunities with G Cakes.  When Ginger isn't decorating cakes, she is working at Dallas County Utility & Reclamation District as an accounting clerk, participating in the Sugar Wonders Cake Club, and pursuing her Associate in Applied Sciences degree in Bakery/Pastry at El Centro College.  She has aced every class so far and can now make various yummy pastries, use fondant, gumpaste, and marzipan on cakes, and is nationally certified as a food protection manager.

In September 2007 Ginger entered the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show held at the Tulsa State Fair in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  She entered a Baylor UniversityŽ bear (in honor of her alma mater) and a Dallas Stars hockey puck in the Adult Beginner Novelty Cakes category.  The bear won
3rd place in this category!  In February 2008, Ginger entered the Capital Confectioners' "That Takes the Cake!" Sugar Art and Cake Show held in Austin, Texas.  This time she entered the Culinary Student division, since she was now a culinary student!  A couple of weeks prior to the competition, Ginger was asked to make a baby shower cake that resembled the invitation to this shower.  Since she thought that cake turned out cute, she reprinted the invitation and made the cake again for the Austin show.  This time she won 1st place in the Special Techniques category!!  Thanks to Jen for the cute idea!  In August 2008 she entered a tasting contest held at Lavon Drive Baptist Church and won 1st place in the Chocolate Cakes category for her Double Chocolate Layer Cake entry (thanks to her grandmother for bringing this cake to her attention!) and 3rd place in the Cakes Made with Fruit and/or Nuts category for her Pear and Walnut Cake entry.  In February 2009 she again entered the 2009 Capital Confectioners' "That Takes the Cake!" Sugar Art and Cake Show in the Culinary Student division, and won 2nd place for her Buttercream Only entry and 3rd place in the Tasting Contest for her Jazzed-Up Cake Mix "Chocolate Amaretto Cake."  Thanks to Steven & Jessica for bringing this cake to my attention!  To see a picture of these cakes, please visit the Gallery page.
